EV Incentives in Victoria (2026)
Green-car concessional motor vehicle duty · 20% registration rebate (all fuel types)
Official sources · checked 17 July 2026Victoria's electric vehicle registration discount has ended, so an EV no longer receives that concession on its rego. The benefit that still counts is on the duty side: Victoria's concessional duty rate for lower-emission passenger cars, which electric vehicles qualify for, is charged at the green rate rather than the higher passenger rates that apply to other cars. Victoria's separate distance-based charge on electric vehicles, once levied per kilometre travelled, was struck down by the courts as beyond state power and no longer applies, with the amounts that had been paid refunded. The table below sets out what is active and what has closed.
Every VIC EV scheme, current status
| Scheme | Status | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Green-car concessional motor vehicle duty | Active | Flat $8.40 per $200 at any value for cars at or under 120 g CO₂/km — including every pure EV — versus up to $18.00 per $200 for other passenger cars. source |
| 20% registration rebate (all fuel types) | Active (to 31 July 2026) | Eligible Victorians can claim 20% off 2025-26 private light-vehicle registration (up to $186, two vehicles per person) via Service Victoria — applications close 31 July 2026. Not EV-specific. source |
| $100 annual ZLEV registration discount | Closed | Scrapped in the 2024-25 Budget Update — EV rego aligned with other vehicles from 1 January 2026. source |
| ZLEV road-user charge | Closed | Struck down by the High Court (Vanderstock, October 2023); not charged since, all payments refunded with interest. source |
