Territory Revenue Office — motor vehicle stamp duty · rates effective 17 July 2026

Northern Territory duty is the simplest of the lot: a single flat rate applied to the dutiable value, with no tiers, no emissions loading and no engine factor. Whatever the car is worth, the same rate does the work.

Plug-in electric vehicles are the exception. They pay no duty up to a value cap, and the standard rate only on the part above it, and that concession runs until the scheme's end date. It applies to used electric vehicles too, not just new ones.

Frequently asked questions

How much is stamp duty on a $50,000 car in NT?
For a passenger vehicle: $1,500.00 ($3 per $100 (or part)). The calculator above shows the math for any value.
What value is NT duty charged on?

Duty is charged on the dutiable value. In the NT, for an arm's-length sale that value takes in accessories and on-road costs as well as the base price of the car, so the figure duty is worked out on can be a little broader than the sticker price alone.

Who is exempt from motor vehicle duty in NT?

The Northern Territory has exemption and concession categories, and the electric-vehicle concession, nil duty up to a value cap, is the standout while it lasts. Common categories across the states also include certain family transfers, primary producers, and eligible pensioner or veteran concessions. Conditions apply and change, so check the Territory Revenue Office for what applies to your circumstances.
