VicRoads vehicle fees + TAC Schedule of Rates 2026-27 · rates effective 1 July 2026

Victorian rego is a registration fee plus the Transport Accident Charge, the TAC, which doubles as your compulsory injury cover, so there's no separate CTP to buy. The registration fee is steady from car to car; the TAC is the part that moves the total.

The TAC is set by where the car is kept, sorted into three risk zones: highest in metropolitan Melbourne, lower through the outer suburbs, and lowest in the country. Two identical cars can carry quite different rego bills purely because of their postcode, which is the thing that catches people out when they compare.

What's included — and what's extra

The total shown bundles the registration fee and the TAC charge for the car's zone, so unlike some states there's no separate insurance to add on top. What it doesn't cover is anything vehicle-specific, such as new number plates or the transfer costs that come with first registering or buying a car.

  • Included: the registration fee and the zone-based TAC charge, which is your compulsory injury cover.
  • Extra: number plates and any transfer or new-registration costs.

CTP is the TAC charge — already included in the totals above.

Can I register for less than 12 months in VIC?

Victoria offers shorter registration terms as well as the full year. The registration fee is charged pro-rata with a small service fee for the shorter period, and the TAC is scaled to the term, so a part-year registration comes out close to its proportional share of the annual figure.
